Sounding Surfaces and Quality of Tone

This article by Jane Curtis, a Zitherist and transcriber of music for the Zither, was first published some time ago in the magazine of the Fretted Instruments Guild of America (FIGA). With Jane's permission, we are posting her article "Sounding Surfaces and Quality of Tone" here. Jane summarizes four perspectives on what influences the tonal quality of stringed instruments. Zitherists who are curious about how wood itself affects the tonal quality of the instruments will find Jane's juxtaposition of these views enlightening.

Over a 30 year career as a professional Zither player, Sebastian Fichtl performed in dozens of countries and hundreds of venues around the world. As one of the zither's most prodigious ambassadors, Sebastian introduced the music of the zither to thousands of people. His easy-going manner and lively charm bridged the gulfs of culture and language.

Musical Cultures of the European Union: An Instrumental Voyage

The Museu de Música (Music Museum) of Lisbon, Portugal put on an exhibit about the 27 European States as represented by their characteristic musical instruments. The Zither was the representative of Germany. Willi Huber and Donald Tsusaki provided assistance to the Director of the exhibition.
